Joseph B. Underhill

Assoc. Professor and Chair, Political Science Department; Director, International Relations Program, Augsburg College

Joseph B. Underhill is Associate Professor and Chair of the Political Science Department and Director of the International Relations program at Augsburg College.  He also helped start and now teaches courses in the Environmental Studies and Peace & Global Studies programs there.  He currently serves as the campus Coordinator for the Nobel Peace Prize Forum, co-hosted each year at Augsburg College and the University of Minnesota. In 2010-12 he served as the Batalden Faculty Scholar in Applied Ethics.  His experiential and interdisciplinary courses regularly take students off campus, including trips down the Mississippi River, participation in Model UN in New York City, and studying comparative environmental politics in locations, including Egypt, New Zealand, Nicaragua, and Tanzania. He has written and presented on the intersection of political psychology, security, and the environment and is author of the book Death and the Statesman (Palgrave, 2001).  His most recent research examines the relationship between urban sustainability and environmental pedagogy
