Omar El Zoheiry is a Macalester College senior with majors in Political Science, Economics, and International Studies. Since the Arab Spring, Omar has been very active in studying the changing political landscape in the Middle Eastern and in advancing Egyptian democratization. In the fall of 2012, he participated in Minnesota Peace Initiative’s panel discussion on the Arab Spring alongside U.S. Ambassador to Morocco, Samuel L. Kaplan, and Norwegian Ambassador to Syria, Rolf Willy Hansen. Omar spent the summer of 2012 working for Human Rights Watch in Cairo, his hometown, and is currently finishing two senior theses regarding Egypt’s transition to democracy and the rule of law. In the spring of 2011, Omar organized and participated in more than a dozen panel discussions, speeches, public forums, and other events that dealt with the implications of the Arab Spring, with a special focus on the Egyptian revolution. While Omar is an Egyptian national, he also studied and lived in Canada, the United States, and the Netherlands
